I'll admit I watched it (and liked it)

Do you have a list of movies you want to see? I do, but I've gone way overboard with mine. You see, I have my "to see" list on an Excel file. Stay with me; it gets worse. I have my list in alphabetical order. There are 165 total movies on this list right now. I color code the movies that are available to rent in purple. That would be 109 of the 165. Movies with ***** to the right are available to rent at the library. That is 31 of the 165 or 31 of the 109. The movies that are at the library are at the top of the list, followed by available to rent movies, and then movies that are either not out yet, are currently showing at the theaters, or are stuck in limbo (e.g., Undertaking Betty). I even put a number to the left indicating which month and day the movie is available to rent.

Last week when I was at work, I started updating my list. This means I going to VideoETA and updating when the movie will come to video. It was then I realized that this is way out of control and slightly on the psycho side. Actually, I've always known it was psycho, but the out of control part really got to me. I have ONE HUNDRED SIXTY FIVE movies to watch? How did it get to this point? Oh yeah, I remember. I started the list in 2001 and was crazy busy working 20-30 hours/week and going to school full-time. And now it's to the point that I watch like 3 movies per week but because of new movies coming out, my list is a revolving door. Watch a movie, delete it from list. Watch a trailer, add it to list. So, the total number of movies pretty much stays the same.

As I looked at the list, it occured to me that the "better" movies don't stay on there long because I either really want to see them or someone else will watch it with me. I figure that someone will see this list at some point on my computer. I really don't want to explain why there are some horrible movie choices on there. So, I've decided to get the more embarrasing movies off of the list so I don't have to put up with the snickers. Starting with...

From Justin to Kelly = 3.5/10. I'm not sure if I'm more humiliated by the fact that it was even on the list, that the guy at Blockbuster chuckled, or that I rated it that high.

Goal by December 31, 2005: Get the purple movies (available to rent) down to less than 15. I can do it!

I can't believe that there are 165 movies in existence that you WANT to see! My problem in choosing a movie to watch is that everything seems to SUCK. The neighbors invited me to watch "Are We There Yet" yesterday, and it was sort of like "Meet the Fockers" -- generally mean (in the guise of being funny) with a really lame ending. Bottom line, I suppose, is that on the journey to a GOOD movie, we are NOT there yet.

It used to be that I could watch a movie, even one I did not think I was particularly interested in, and think "Wow, that was a good movie!" afterward. Not so anymore. Now I watch and think "That is two hours of my life I will never get back."

True. Most of them will be 2 hours of my life I can't get back. However, I know that I won't be doing anything more productive with those two hours, so why not waste it on a lame movie instead of...playing backgammon?

And it's my personal hypothesis/theroy/idea that the reason more and more movies suck is because there are simply more and more movies. It's apparently easier to make a movie or something. Or maybe it's just my imagination that there are 15 new movies coming out every week (if you include limited NY/LA and the likes). Was it really like that in, say, 1950?

I would generally agree, except for the fact that my social life is sporatic. One month I'm swamped, the next month I'm bored the whole time. So, NetFlix or anything like that might not work for me. I might do the Blockbuster thing where you can get unlimited rentals for a month or two, though. That could be worth it. I have to wade through the free ones at the library first. Then we'll see.
